Status of the Excelsior Scholarship Application. There is a scholarship program offered by the state of New York. The award is known as the Excelsior Scholarship. This one allows students to attend SUNY or CUNY colleges without paying tuition. Keep in mind that it does not cover other college expenses such as tuition, room and board, and textbooks.

There are several eligibility requirements for the Excelsior Scholarship program. Here is a list of several of these prerequisites:

Eligibility Requirements:

  • You must be a resident of New York State and have lived there continuously for 12 months prior to the term’s start.
  • You must be a citizen of the United States or an eligible non-citizen;
  • You must have completed high school in the United States, obtained a high school equivalency diploma, or passed a federally-approved Ability to Benefit test, as defined by the Commissioner of the State Education Department.
  • You must have an adjusted gross income of less than $110,000 for the 2018-2019 academic year.
  • You must be seeking a bachelor’s degree at City University of New York.
  • You must enroll in at least 12 credits per term and complete at least 30 credits per year applicable to your degree program.
  • Prior to applying for an Excelsior Scholarship, you must have earned a minimum of 30 credits per year (consecutively) applicable to your degree program if you attended college prior to the 2018-2019 academic year.
  • You must not be in default on any New York State or federal student loan or on the repayment of any New York State grant.
  • You must be in compliance with the terms of the service condition(s) associated with a previous New York State award;
  • You must adhere to a contract requiring you to reside in New York State for the duration of the award. If employed during this time, you must be employed in the state of New York.

Financial Requirements:

  • You must have a federally adjusted gross income of $125,000 or more. On the federal income tax form, those who are unfamiliar with the Adjusted Gross Income or AGI can find this section. It is the difference between your total gross income and your specific deductions. This is determined by your income, that of your spouse, and, if applicable, that of your parents.
  • You are not eligible for the Excelsior Scholarship if your full tuition is covered by TAP, Pell Grants, and other scholarships.

Application Requirements:

In addition to the FAFSA and TAP applications, you must also submit an Excelsior Scholarship application. To find the application, simply visit www.hesc.ny.gov, the HESC’s official website. Remember that you do not need to complete this application if you are already listed as an Excelsior Scholarship recipient from a previous application period. One is considered a recipient if they signed and submitted the Excelsior Scholarship contract, even if they did not receive payment in the previous academic year.

How and when do you apply for the Excelsior Scholarship? According to Higher Education Services Corporation or HESC’s official website, the application deadline for this scholarship program has passed. It indicates that there is no way for you to apply at this time.

You can receive a notification if you applied for the Excelsior Scholarship and want to know the status of your application, or if you missed the opportunity and want to receive updates on the Excelsior Application. You must first visit the Excelsior Scholarship Program page of Higher Education Services Corporation or HESC in order to receive a notification. The best way to contact them is by calling the number listed above, as there is a good chance you will receive a prompt response. It is clearly superior to the other two options. If you want the best response, you should call the number during business hours and on business days.
